fight for fifteen, part two

In my last post I described my participation in last month’s Adjunct Action rally in Saint Louis. Adjunct Action is a project of the Service Employees International Union (SEIU). I’ve since participated in two meetings between adjuncts and upper administration on the Saint Louis University (SLU) campus and learned with some considerable sadness that the effort to organize adjuncts at Webster University across town has failed for the present.

I am an adjunct, though not a typical one. I teach only one course, a senior seminar. As a retiree I have benefits such as health insurance, and I do not need to make my living as an adjunct. I am what is termed a volunteer professional in the current iteration of the Jesuit Just Employment Policy, which we adjuncts at Saint Louis University are asking our administration to adopt. But I have met many young adjuncts since I first became involved in this movement who are making their living as adjuncts, teaching (some of them) upwards of eighteen classes a year at several universities and colleges in order to make ends meet in their busy lives, serving as part of the pool of just-in-time casual labor on which most universities rely to do most teaching of basic courses, and sometimes more, these days.

I have found these young people to be bright, energetic, competent, and savvy. It is not their fault that their academic careers did not open with tenure-track jobs upon their graduation with terminal degrees. It is a mournful fact that the majority of graduates of today’s graduate schools find that their academic careers end with the acquisition of terminal degrees. Marc Bousquet has documented the phenomenon exhaustively in his 2008 book, How the University Works. This result is produced by an insidious system that protects the privilege of “professional” faculty, who don’t have to teach much (which is just as well since many of them find teaching distasteful) and the sometimes redundant graduate programs that employ them as specialists, and of the now vastly inflated administrator class in colleges and universities.

The relegation of responsibility for core mission to a cheap and disposable cadre of casual employees benefits institutional bottom lines as well, which benefit leaves trustees and legislative overseers free to pursue more important concerns such as athletics, property, and alumni relations. In short, today’s university system is designed to serve the interests of everyone but students, their parents, who often pay exorbitant amounts to send their children to colleges and universities whose faculties and administrations hold them in contempt, and the casual faculty itself.

If you think this is extreme, take a look at at a piece in yesterday’s Huffington Post, in which Keith M. Parsons details his message to a group of college freshmen. My Western Civ professor years ago ended the year by telling us ignoramuses that he had “enjoyed” casting his pearls before us swine. This is about the level of Professor Parsons’ discourse. Professor Parsons claims that his students are adults and therefore need only to be led to the fountain of learning (a rhetorical confusion if his audience is a student audience—to whom is he preaching?). Why not treat his students as adults and speak to them as adults. Why the condescension, the posturing, the self-aggrandizement?

I am your professor, not your teacher. There is a difference. Up to now your instruction has been in the hands of teachers, and a teacher’s job is to make sure that you learn. Teachers are evaluated on the basis of learning outcomes, generally as measured by standardized tests. If you don’t learn, then your teacher is blamed. However, things are very different for a university professor. It is no part of my job to make you learn. At university, learning is your job — and yours alone.

To be clear, I am seriously opposed to high-stakes testing and its consequences, particularly the sort of teaching to the test that is becoming standard in schools. But arrogance is arrogance—Professor Parsons is a beautiful illustration of the fact. And begging his pardon, learning is a shared job, in university as in school. To assume the mantle of professor is to assume a huge responsibility. Professor Parsons, rather than accepting that responsibility and taking it seriously, seems intent only upon asserting his superiority to the great unwashed. But Professor Parsons is not an anomaly. He represents the norm, or one aspect of it. He represents the regular part of the professoriate, tenured (or tenurable), privileged in the sense of being allowed relative autonomy to practice his craft (which somehow doesn’t exactly include teaching), and relatively well paid.

But here is how the casual faculty lives and works. Their wages are kept low; the academic job market is a buyer’s market after all, and individual adjuncts have no power to negotiate better wages. (The norm for adjunct compensation at SLU is $3000 per course.) Adjunct employment is restricted at part-time, which restriction avoids the necessity for paying benefits and the possibility of de-facto tenure in the case of adjuncts employed year in and year out. Many universities are now employing their own PhD graduates as adjuncts for a year or two, sometimes more. This is especially true for universities who created PhD programs during the 1970s when post World War II expansion seemed to promise endless economic growth on campus. Many of these mediocre graduate programs no longer have a market justification, but of course their faculties have to be kept busy.

A normal adjunct is employed to teach, and the mere fact that now more than half of the teaching in colleges and universities is done by low-paid adjuncts indicates more than any other fact or set of facts just how seriously colleges and universities take their teaching responsibility. The contempt with which university trustees, administrators, and professional faculties view the basic teaching function is, I believe, primarily to be measured by the fact that what is becoming a majority of the university teaching faculty is being forced into academic peonage. Adjuncts are typically disdained by regular faculty. They do not attend faculty meetings as a rule. They have no vote on matters of policy that concern them. And the best that administrators seem to be able to come up with as an improvement to this system of peonage is to continue it in one form or another, perhaps offering adjuncts yearly contracts with some benefits and a better wage but continuing to enforce their serfdom.

Higher education in America is under grave stress. On the one hand there is much to criticize in the behavior of our major universities and elite colleges. And on the other, every few weeks now we read of wantonly destructive policy changes aimed at these treasured institutions by venal trustees and politicians out to score points with Americans who are presumed to have no affinity for learning or to disestablish academic institutions in the interest of right-wing ideology, junk science, or no science at all. But a more important problem may be that colleges and universities expanded too far too fast after World War II and produced a system that would inevitably have proved unsustainable at the end of the baby-boomer generation. Professor Parsons and others like him for whom the professoriate is an entitlement rather than a responsibility are protected from market forces by the scores of adjuncts who have neither status nor tenure nor job security but do the work of generalists in today’s system of higher education.

Adjuncts are organizing all over the country now, and are winning concessions from university administrations. This is important, I believe, because I am persuaded that higher education in America is in decline and the competition to control the decline is serious and fierce. I am further persuaded that adjuncts are the voiceless in today’s scheme of higher education. I see SEIU Adjunct Action as potentially giving adjuncts a voice, potentially a place at the negotiating table as we as a people attempt to manage the dislocation and human destructiveness of a declining system.

Well, I lied again. I’ve reset the plugin that posts my blog entries to Facebook so that it only posts to my Out the Backroom Window Facebook page. However, I forgot that the plugin posts to Twitter, which in turn posts back to my Facebook timeline. Still, I’ve reduced the clutter somewhat, and I’m leaving things as they are for the time being.

We met in midsummer 2001. He was barely six months old but already silver, deep-chested, long-legged, gregarious poodle, the smartest and most sensitive dog I have ever known. Here is how we looked back then. Two days ago we put him to rest in order to circumvent a cruel and painful death of another kind. A vicious tumor had undermined his lower jaw. He would have been fourteen this December. We called him Murphy.

All deaths are significant, those of animals (beloved or not) no less than those of humans. The fact of death is most commonly present to us as the loss of a single creature out of the aggregate of those present to us. It is this singleness that most discloses to us the mystery of the abundance of God, at whose heart is the blink of an eye and a vanishing. Murphy died in Kathleen’s arms without struggle and apparently without pain. It was as though a wind passed over him and he was gone.

He came to be called Murphy by an agreement of sorts. Kathleen had lost another beloved dog in early 2001. At that point in our relationship we commuted back and forth across the distance between Iowa City, where Kathleen was a professor at the University, and Denton, Texas, where I was beginning my final year of service before retirement from UNT. We planned marriage but had not yet done the deed.

Kathleen called me from a conference in Washington D. C. in late May that year to tell me that she had found a new dog. She described him to me and asked, “Can I keep him?” The question was pro forma, and I knew it. We were pretty sure of one another then. So I answered her question with a question. “What’s his name?” I asked. “Murphy,” she replied. He has been my constant companion since we all moved in together in late August, 2002. Here’s one of my favorite pictures of him perched on the bed in our bedroom.

Murphy had failed at the dog show game. His legs were too long. He had raccoon eyes. But he was built like a whippet and could run like one too. Besides a walk he had three gaits. He could leap into a full-out sprint off the back porch to chase a squirrel. He never caught one, but I was pretty sure he could have done but that the short distance between the porch and the back fence in our tiny city backyard didn’t allow him to get quite up to speed.

He had a jaunty, devil-may-care trot too, that he usually adopted on the leash, but he revealed his true nature when he had a big space to run in. Our friend, Leslie, has a large (and beautiful) backyard in Iowa City, a bit like a second home to us and to Murphy. Countless times I have watched him, when we would arrive for a visit, sprint down the two-story back stairs with an abandon almost painful to see and race around and around Leslie’s yard, running by the fence at the perimeter, quickly settling into a long, soaring lope that he seemed to be able to continue almost indefinitely.

I shall not lack for good memories of Murphy to stand against the memory of the last illness that sapped his life. Among them will be the memory of his bony back against mine in the bed at night and the way he worked the room when we had guests. But since he has now entered the realm of my memories and those of others who knew him and with whom he shared his life, there is another sort of memory I want to memorialize.

We are told that dogs study us; study, particularly, our faces. I have watched Murphy study me for a sum of hours over the years and thought I could see in those raccoon eyes a thing worth my study as well. I speak now not of a study like the study of books or languages or science, but of something far more profound and unsentimental. Here are some lines about it that I found in Rilke’s Eighth Duino Elegy and made into a poem for him at the time I first realized Murphy had joined me in the community of aging. I close with them.

For Murphy, Growing Old

With all its eyes creation sees
an open space. Only our eyes invert,
entrap, surround free beings as they emerge.
What is outside, we know only from the gaze
of animals; already as young children we are
turned around, constrained to see backwards
to live among objects not in the open, which
in animal faces is so deep. Free from death
(only we see that) the animal has its demise
continually behind it and God before, perhaps—
the movement of its being wells up like a spring,

Murphy Farrell/Long (December 12, 2000—July 28, 2014) RIP.

Those lovesick blues, I just lost ’em . . .

I’ll be leaving this on the front page for a while. It’s not a review—you can’t review your friends’ work. Rather, it’s more in the nature of an appreciation. Appreciations are OK, and we once thought them legitimate criticism in the hands of say William Hazlitt, not to compare myself with that adorable genius.

A couple of years back I wrote about my friends, Pattie and Jack Le Sueur from Durham North Carolina. Jack had recently retired from the North Carolina Arts Council, and when I asked him if he and Pattie intended to continue performing around the Research Triangle area as they had since the nineteen-seventies, Jack told me that he was entering “legacy mode”—no more live performing, but that he had in mind to produce some recordings he and Pattie had made over the years.

The first of these (I say first hoping there will be more) is now available, a double CD/DVD set entitled Pattie and Jack Le Sueur and Cedar Creek Live at Learned Place. I hadn’t known about Learned Place, but here’s a history written by proprietors, Deborah Jakubs & Jim Roberts, that’s included with the discs. As you can see it’s as much about Pattie and Jack and the album as it is about the venue. I’ll quote it all in hopes it will interest readers as it interests me.

Learned Place Music was inspired by chance encounters and our growing friendship with Pattie and Jack Le Sueur, first admiring their performances at the wonderful Cedar Creek Gallery in Creedmoor, then conversations at kids’ soccer games. Having expressed admiration for their music, we were invited to hear them play an opening set at Peter Kramer’s farm in Orange County featuring a trio then barely known in the US – the Krüger Brothers. Not only did we hear the amazing Krüger Brothers for the first time, but we also met the full Cedar Creek band, with the multi-instrumentalist and fine singer Rick LaReno on banjo and lead guitar and Mike Foster on bass. Our sons were soon taking private lessons with Rick, and we became groupies of Pattie & Jack Le Sueur and Cedar Creek. And the Krüger Brothers, who have several times collaborated musically with Pattie and Jack and Cedar Creek. [You can read about the Krüger Brothers here. JL].

These friendships inspired us to begin sharing our home for acoustic music performances, what we dubbed Southern Roots music. We are now in our tenth year of the Learned Place Music series and have hosted over 50 concerts. Pattie & Jack Le Sueur and Cedar Creek took part in many of these performances until they ended their collaboration in 2009. This album, with songs recorded between 2003 and 2006, shows both the evolution of the band and the concert series. Through it all is the astonishingly beautiful singing of Pattie Le Sueur, punctuated by some great lead singing by Jack and Rick. In all our experience, it is hard to imagine a finer singer than Pattie. Were it not for day jobs and family commitments, these folks could have been making a mark on the musical world anywhere. But they chose Durham, and we are grateful. Their music is timeless and beautiful and rendered extraordinarily well in this collection.

This is a great collector’s item for fans of Pattie & Jack Le Sueur and Cedar Creek, for the faithful supporters of Learned Place Music, and for anyone devoted to fine acoustic music.

The album contains 34 songs. My favorites at the moment are the second two songs on the first disc: “The One Who knows,” a Dar Williams song about breaking away and letting go that Pattie calls contemplative. It displays some of the best things Pattie does as a singer, quiet and thoughtful things that require mastery both of her voice and of the microphone, as well as maturity and interpretive insight. My other favorite is “Lark in the Morning,” a wistful Kate McLeod song about loss and the memory of love–how’s that for country?–that Pattie and the boys in the band almost turn into a dance hall stomp. I say almost because the song their way still retains its seriousness. It just doesn’t protest too much. For a sentimental listener like me this song is the true gold, in the vein of A. P. Carter, et al.

Rick LaReno does some fine guitar picking in “Lark in the Morning” and many other songs on the album. For the second disc opener LaReno turns a performance of folk chestnut, “The Fox,” into an occasion for some splendid guitar riffs. He also sings well, especially in John Gorka’s “Gypsy Life,” and plays fine Scruggs style banjo. Mike Foster, the bass player, doesn’t get the spotlight much, but provides the solid bottom of the music that never rings false, sings harmony vocals, and sometimes contributes a bit of percussion by thumping his big resonator guitar.

Pattie and Jack’s son, Jon Le Sueur, a professional musician and filmmaker in his own right, plays guitar and accompanies his mother on “A Stor Mo Chroi,” a traditional Celtic lament; and daughter Sarah Le Sueur joins in the choruses of country favorites “New Night Dawning” by John Poythress and Tammy Kidd and Delbert McClinton’s “Two More Bottles of Wine.” Michael Borstleman and Jens Krüger fill out the ensemble with mandolin and banjo as needed.

All in all this new album is a great romp that spans genres from traditional folk to contemporary country and rockabilly. There’s even a good yodeling song, Jimmy Rogers’ “When the Cactus is in Bloom,” that shows off Pattie’s skill as a vocal acrobat. Jack’s “Administrator’s Blues” is included and his lovely wedding song, “Two Paths,” but not his “Waisting My Time,” which I miss; though I already have that song on Pattie and Jack’s earlier CD, Two Paths.

The back and forth banter as Pattie introduces the songs provides more good fun. At one point she quips that Jack is in administration, and Jack fires back that she (of course) is not, eliciting a big laugh all around. One has the sense that the jokes are as familiar to these friends as the songs are. There seems an easy camaraderie between them all, performers and audience alike. Jack plays mostly second guitar, filling in the rhythms and the harmonies, sitting back and letting others take stage. He was always good at that, though I’m sure that much of the thinking that shapes these performances is his.

On the whole this album seems exceptionally well-produced. The sound quality and the mixing are excellent, and the video quality is high. There are some flaws here and there, places where feedback intrudes, an intonation problem or two. But I think such things are to be expected in recordings made at live performances. What one gains from such recordings is a special kind of presence, something more than passion, a kind of focused immediacy, what Hazlitt called gusto. These are fine musicians at the height of their powers performing music that has become part of their being—for an audience of friends and neighbors to whom they are physically present.
